The role develops students’ English communication skills across reading, writing, listening and speaking, while fostering intercultural understanding, critical thinking, confidence and success in IB Diploma Programme assessments.
Key Responsibilities:
1. IBDP English B Curriculum and Lesson Delivery:
- Plan and deliver high-quality IBDP English B lessons in accordance with the current IB Language Acquisition subject guide and its prescribed themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation and sharing the planet.
- Develop students’ receptive, productive and interactive language skills through authentic spoken, written and multimodal texts, meaningful communication and purposeful inquiry.
- Differentiate instruction for Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students, including the study of literary works at HL, while responding to varied levels of language proficiency.
2. IBDP English B Assessment and Feedback:
- Design formative and summative assessments aligned with English B objectives and assessment criteria; provide timely, actionable feedback on language development and communication.
- Prepare students for Paper 1 (writing), Paper 2 (listening and reading) and the Individual Oral internal assessment, including the literature-based oral component at HL, while reinforcing academic integrity.
3. Classroom Practice:
- Create a supportive, inclusive and communicative classroom environment in which students take risks, participate actively and use English with growing independence.
- Apply inquiry-based and language acquisition strategies, purposeful scaffolding and varied resources to develop fluency, accuracy and learner confidence.
4. Language Development and Intercultural Understanding:
- Build vocabulary, grammatical range, text-type awareness and intercultural understanding through exploration of contemporary global contexts and diverse perspectives.
- Strengthen students’ writing for different purposes and audiences, listening comprehension, reading strategies, discussion and spoken interaction.
5. Student Support:
- Monitor student progress in all four language skills and provide targeted support for individual language development and examination readiness.
- Encourage reflection, learner autonomy, cultural curiosity and confidence while supporting students with different starting levels of English.
6. Parent Communication and Enrichment:
- Communicate professionally with parents about students’ progress in IBDP English B, proficiency development, assessment performance and next steps.
- Contribute to language-rich events, reading opportunities and cultural activities that promote authentic English use beyond the classroom.
7. Cross-Curricular Collaboration:
- Collaborate with colleagues to support language development across the IB Diploma Programme and make appropriate connections with Theory of Knowledge (TOK).
- Support interdisciplinary learning and contribute to relevant Extended Essay (EE) guidance or supervision when assigned and appropriately qualified.
8. Professional Practice:
- Participate in English B subject-specific professional development, collaborative planning, assessment standardisation and relevant school training.
- Uphold IB academic integrity, safeguarding requirements and professional standards in all work with students and colleagues.
9. Other tasks as assigned by the school leaders.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Master’s degree in English Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.
- Recognised teaching qualification and substantial experience teaching English language acquisition at secondary school level.
- Experience teaching IBDP English B at Standard Level and/or Higher Level in DP one and DP two.
- Strong understanding of the IBDP English B syllabus, the five prescribed themes, SL/HL expectations and assessment requirements.
