Job Description: Music Teacher and Head of Performing Arts

 

Our emphasis on the IB curriculum encourages students to weave connections among the artistic, academic, social, and emotional threads of their learning. Through large group sessions, break-out sessions, and specialized elective classes, our performing arts program utilizes first-class facilities, including a black box theatre, dedicated music rooms, and open performance spaces, to showcase our students' artistic confidence.

The Music Teacher and Head of Performing Arts will not only teach music but also coordinate, develop, and lead performances and curriculum across the discipline throughout the year, serving the entire ISA Wuhan community. A central responsibility of this role is to provide instructional leadership and mentorship to other performing arts faculty, fostering a collaborative and high-achieving department culture. This position is also responsible for ensuring cohesive curriculum coordination across all grade levels.

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Teach a range of music courses to secondary students, ensuring the delivery of high-quality instruction aligned with the school's philosophy.

• Lead the strategic development and alignment of the entire Performing Arts curriculum (including Music and Drama) within the IB framework, catering to the needs of all grade levels within the Wuhan ISA community.

• Oversee and manage the department's resources, including budgets, schedules, and the use of all performing arts facilities.

• Direct and produce major performances throughout the year, showcasing the work of all performing arts students.

• Recruit, mentor, and evaluate performing arts faculty, promoting professional growth and program excellence.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Music, Music Education, or a related field required.

• Master’s level degree or above in Music, Arts Leadership/Administration, or Education strongly preferred.

• Minimum 5 years of teaching experience, with a proven record of leadership and curriculum development in performing arts, preferably in an independent school environment.

• Demonstrated experience in managing a team, developing a cohesive K-12 arts program, and producing public performances.

• Participates in and leads professional learning communities, department-level teams, and other collaborative communities to design and plan instruction, improve practice, and achieve student outcomes.

• Drive and energy to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

General Requirements for International Teaching Positions

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in relevant subject area
  • A recognized teaching qualification (e.g. BEd, PGCE)
  • Minimum two years’ experience of classroom teaching in mainstream education sector
  • Previous experience of teaching the IB curriculum is preferred, high potential candidates without IB experience might be considered
  • Well-versed in various teaching resources including digital tools to support and enhance teaching and learning
  • Sensitivity to the cultural differences
  • A willingness to actively participate in the academic enrichment and co-curricular programmes
